Cynder Get Back In Groove of Things

Preparation is key to success Newark, NJ-

The Cynder have one thing on their mind for the 2009 season and that is to bring a championship home to New Jersey. The key to that is simple: Preparation. “With that in mind, the Cynder are holding volunteer workouts in April (19th & 26th), for the first time since finishing last season at 5-5. “Since the first of the year, my motto is to be more prepared; mentally and physically,” says Sanders. “Preparing mentally by getting up earlier than your opponent and physically by being able to stand up and play in the 5th quarter, if you have to.

Sanders looks to Reload at Key Positions

Loss at RB and Offensive Line will be tough to fill Newark, NJ

With the loss of several key players from last year’s 5-5 team, especially rookie standout, Alfredo Carrillo (now attending William Paterson University and playing spring ball), the Cynder have key positions to fill. “Filling the shoes of A.C. will be tough, but that’s how the game goes,” shrugged Sanders. “Will get through it all and continue to sell the program.” “As for the linemen, well, that goes without saying, those guys are a tough commodity to come by. We will have to again, sell the program, search high and low at the gyms, schools, clubs, etc. until we find a good fit with them.”

2008 Cynder Player Awards

Key accolades extended to current WPU Athlete, Alfredo Carrillo Newark, NJ.

Although the 2008 season fell short of the team going to the playoffs for the first time in history, some positives eclipse that. Various rookies and veterans stepped it up last year, resulting in the Cynder going 5-5, but here are a couple that bear mentioning: Offensive Rookie and Team MVP, Alfredo Carrillo was an astounding addition to the team last year. He was explosive in the first few games of the season; covering 300 plus yards and 5 TD’s in the early half of the season. He was the leading rusher in the league with close to 900 yards and 8 TD’s before succumbing to injury, late in the season. “He will be deeply missed, but we certainly wish him the best, now that he has a new journey with William Paterson University,” mentioned Sanders. Veteran standout and Defensive MVP, David Gerena was impressive and made the league All-star game for the 2nd-year in a row, by recording over 50-plus tackles. “David is a solid football player and I’m sure that wherever he goes, he will continue to do well,” Sanders added.
